Teaching Artist – Through My Soul (sneaker design program)

 Teaching Artist Job Summary:    The OfA Teaching Artist, in partnership with the OfA Lead Teaching Artist, is responsible for developing and delivering high quality instructional content that is student-centered, standards-based, and culturally relevant.  An OfA Teaching Artist will use their artistic skills, background, and experience to work with students in grades 1 to 8 to engage them in project-based or semester/year-long activities. As part of OfA’s work with students, the Teaching Artist will employ the following processes in each of their classes:  Arts Making, Arts Literacy, Interpretation and Documentation, and Making Connections (cross-content, community, cultural, global).

Through My Soul (TMS) program description:    TMS is a fun and creative shoe design project with a vision to empower and engage middle and high school aged students.  TMS is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the history, culture, and meaning behind sneaker reinvention.  Through the program, students utilize a combination of art, technology, reading, and writing as a means of self-expression.  By learning about the refurbishing, maintenance, and redesign of their own sneakers, students obtain the tools and knowledge to create their own sneaker design and gain a stronger sense of personal identity.  Students are also introduced to the business side of the sneaker culture and how to utilize their newly acquired design skills to become future entrepreneurs. The ultimate goal of Through My Sole is to spark imagination and creativity to help develop confident and innovative lifelong learners.
